In 2017
I launched a blog that would see me earn my first online income.
It was not the first time that I was opening a blog.
The first one didn’t do well because I lacked proper distribution.
Creating content on the internet is only one-quarter of the work.
Three-quarters of the work involves understanding distribution.
Distribution simply means getting as much people to consume that content as possible.
You may be creating the best content in your niche but if you don’t understand how to distribute it, then it won’t get many views.
The platform that you are publishing on also matters.
I used WordPress to create my first blog, but because I lacked the finances and insight needed to drive traffic to it using SEO (Search Engine Optimization),
I ended up writing articles that was read by only me and the Google bots that were crawling my page.
My second blog was built on a platform that had a distribution system in place (followers),
So it was not hard for me to get people to constantly view my content.
I grew my blog to over 3000 followers from around the world and made over $7000 from my content.
In 2018, I moved to building my brand on WhatsApp and I was able to replicate the same level of success on WhatsApp.
Currently, I have over 7750 WhatsApp contacts and more are added every week.
I have been able to earn from selling digital products and also got job/consulting offers because of it.
So today, I want to share some of the principles that helped me build a strong brand and sustainable income by leveraging my social media.
I might turn this into a series, so quickly subscribe by hitting the button below.
I will also be sharing something that I have created and would love you to be a part of that would help you earn significant income online. So read to the end.
The Age of Consumption
I will start by saying that not everyone should be a social media creator.
I am not trying to cram this into your throat.
Just need you to understand what’s possible if you take the initiative to create content in the world that we are in.
And don’t fall for that popular excuse. “I don’t have time”
You say that and then end up spending three to five hours daily on social media.
If you have time to consume then you have time to create content.
Also, don’t overthink it.
Your content shouldn’t need to be extremely polished.
You are not writing the script for a Hollywood movie.
A while back, I experimented to check if TikTok would be a great fit for me.
Below are some of the videos that I made.
All I did was wake up in the morning and shoot one video.
Video length was always between 2-3 Minutes.
I used an open laptop to support my phone, resting it on the laptop screen, and used a rechargeable lamp that I had at home as a ring light.
You don’t need any fancy setup to get started.
As long as you are reading this post, you have everything that you need.
A smartphone and an Internet connection.
So with that said, let me talk about some of the secrets that helped me.
Shows Not Shops
No one picks up their phone and opens social media seeking something to buy.
They are coming for either one or more of the following things;
Entertainment
Information
Education
These three things are also arranged according to their level of priority.
If you create content that falls under these categories consistently you will earn the attention of people.
Before you can earn money online, you need to earn attention and that’s only possible if you give people what they are seeking.
And the best way to be consistent with this is to treat your content creation like a show.
Shows are produced intentionally to hold your attention and get you watching week after week.
A few months ago, I started sharing interesting Ads on my WhatsApp Status.
I name the show “Ad Of The Day"
All I did was post one great Ad on my status.
This simple show has sparked a lot of conversations and a lot of people have sent me great Ads that they found online.
That’s the way the internet works.
If you create content around something consistently, people will come to see you as an Authority in that space.
In a matter of weeks, they will start sharing resources and even opportunities related to that thing with you.
And like in the example above, you mustn’t even be a creator, you can just curate helpful things and get similar results.
All Instablog does is curate trending news and they have more than six million followers on Instagram currently.
The reason why I explain this very simply is that a lot of people struggle when it comes to creating online content.
They overthink the process and end up being paralyzed.
The advent of AI has even made the content creation process easier.
Tap into it.
Flag A Whale
One of the best kinds of shows to do is interviews.
Three things helped accelerate my blog growth in 2017.
Being a Reply Guy, Hosting Interviews and Contests.
The best way to be a reply guy is to engage with the content of people who have already built a following that contains your target market.
So if you are building something that is targeted at people in tech,
Find people that fall under the following categories that create content consistently online ;
Popular skilled people in the tech space.
People building products for the tech space
People who invest in tech products
10% of the reason why you engage with these people is to slowly become part of their network as they notice your thoughtful comments on their posts.
90% of the reason is so that you can seen by the very people that you are targeting.
1/4 of your comments on any posts should targeted at the person who published it.
3/4 of your comments should be a response to other people who are commenting on the posts.
You can agree with something they said, share your view, etc.
The best kind of comments to make are the ones that end with questions because they will drive more engagement.
The best way to host interviews is by starting with the least influential people and building it up from there.
The big guys would mostly ignore your interview requests until you have proof of work.
So start with the smaller guys and tell them to recommend someone.
If you tell someone that they were recommended by X person, they are more likely to agree to an interview.
Interviews are great as they help you tap into the audience of the people that you are interviewing.
And of course, they need to be people who have your target audience following them.
Interviews are best done weekly, but if you want to up the tempo, twice a week is fine.
Contests are a great way to help people and also get support from the big whales.
A contest that I ran in 2017 changed my life.
The funny thing was that I was making sacrifices from my blog earnings to pay the contest prize.
But after the first few weeks, I got sponsors and started being paid a lot of money to run the contests.
There are big people in your field who want to support other people but don’t have the time.
If you design a great contest, they will sponsor if they see that you are serious.
But this only works if you are willing to keep running the contest even if you don’t get sponsors.
So don’t be moved by greed.
There is something that you also need to understand.
These strategies only give the best results if you create helpful content.
If the people that you are attracting come to your page and don’t see any valuable content, they won’t follow you.
So make sure that your content is sound before you start seeking authority.
You Need To Sell Something
Unless the platform that you are building on is like YouTube, Twitter, etc that does revenue sharing.
Selling something is a must.
It can be a physical or a digital product, but something needs to be sold.
For digital products, it’s best that you create something that you are sure that people need.
As opposed to creating something that you feel they need.
As you create content and get questions, start documenting the recurring questions that you get.
This doesn’t mean you can’t get inspired by the digital product of people who have a similar audience, but make sure that you people need it too.
Normally, I use a pre-sell method to launch digital products.
I first talk about it and get 10-20 people to pay for the first version.
It’s only after the money is sitting in my bank account do I start creating the product.
Then with time, I will use the results and testimonials of that first batch to sell to others.
Don’t make the mistake of creating something for weeks/months only for you to find out that no one needs it.
Introducing Day One Labs
Apart from this framework that I shared here today.
I am starting a Cooperative of brand owners who want to use the content-driven model to drive growth for their personal/business brands.
I created a WhatsApp course in 2019 that has helped hundreds of people build a profitable brand using WhatsApp.
Some have even gone on to apply the strategies on other platforms.
It is the lessons in that course that would sound like a foundation for Day One Labs.
