I started writing online in 2017.

And that was after years of reading up all I could about writing online.

In those days(2012), writing on the Internet was much harder.

You needed a Laptop/Computer to do really serious work.

And Twitter was not that popular in Nigeria then, so there was little that I could do then to start.

I got my first laptop in late 2016 due to a school program.

I started a WordPress blog first but didn’t have the funds to set up a proper blog.

I was still able to publish a few articles after discovering Steemit in January 2017.

I switched quickly to it because it contained all the tools that I needed to write and earn online.

I wrote on Steemit for 2 years, I amassed over 3000 global readers and published over 5000 posts( Articles + Comments).

Despite the fact that Steemit had a reward system, a lot of writers on the platform struggled to earn.

However, I was able to clock around $4000 in earnings in the first three months because of someone writing strategies that I deployed.

Earning online from writing goes beyond just writing.

You need to be able to understand how to :

Connect with your audience the right way.
The psychology of the platform which you are writing on
And how best to distribute your content.

A lot of people spend so much time creating content and little time distributing it the right way.

Distributing content goes beyond just posting the link on social media.

You need to share insights from your content on social media platforms directly.

Not everyone would click on links that take them outside social media.

Think about this for a second.

How many times do you click on links that take you outside social media?

You build a faster connection with people by sharing content where they are (social media) as opposed to where your content is hosted.

Does this mean that a blog/Newsletter is useless?

No, it is not.

Once you prove yourself you would be able to get a consistent flow of loyal readers who will follow you wherever you go.

Also as you invest in things like SEO, you would be able to also capture readers from Google searches.

But for someone who is just starting out, it is important that you take social blogging seriously.

It helps you build a strong early network with fellow people in your field.

The Struggle For Most People Writing Online.

I am of the opinion that it is not only writers that need to learn the art of writing online.

As long as you are someone who is building an online business, or you are someone who aims to use the Internet to market their business.

Learning how to write online is vital.

Now there are a few struggles that a lot of people face when it comes to this.

Most people don’t know how to navigate things like:

The topics they need to write about
The best platforms for them to use
How to create the optimal writing process
The people they are writing for.

Most people struggle the most with the last point, but I have found out that Jack Butcher’s quote on marketing also fits for writing online.

So I will paraphrase.

Writing is the process of finding people that believe in what you believe in

One thing that you need to realize is that everyone cannot find your content helpful.

We all have different interests.

But for every person who finds your content helpful, there are Millions of people out there like that person.

You just are to keep creating and distributing your content and they will find you with time.
